The Government of Japan has signed a financial agreement worth 400 million Japanese Yen, equivalent to US$2.7 million (K4.4 billion), with the Government of Malawi for the provision of road rehabilitation equipment for Lilongwe City Council.
The agreement was signed today, Friday, 30th October 2026, at the Ministry of Finance Headquarters at Capital Hill in Lilongwe. Finance Minister Hon. Joseph Mathyola Mwanamvekha, MP, signed on behalf of Malawi, while Japanese Ambassador His Excellency Naito Yasushi represented Japan. A grant agreement was also signed with JICA Chief Representative Mr. Yukinari Tanaka.
Mwanamvekha thanked Japan for its continued support since Malawi's independence in 1964, saying the equipment would strengthen road maintenance and rehabilitation in Lilongwe. He assured Japan of transparency and accountability in the use of the equipment.
The Minister also appealed to Japan to extend similar support to Blantyre, Zomba and Mzuzu, which face challenges in road maintenance equipment, garbage collection vehicles and firefighting equipment.
